What's the story behind the Liberty Belle?

On September 9, 1944 the 390th Bomb Group attacked a target in Dusseldorf, Germany and suffered its second largest single mission loss of the war.

Over the target just prior to bomb release, one of the low squadron B-17s was hit in the Bomb bay by flak. The 1000 lb. bombs exploded and nine of the twelve aircraft in the squadron were instantly

destroyed or knocked out of formation.

Six of the nine went down over the target, one flew two hours on a single engine and landed at Paris, another "crippled plane" landed in Belgium and the other struggled back to its home base and landed long after the other thirty nine B-17s had returned from the mission.

The one that came home was "Liberty Belle", she went on to complete 64 combat missions before being salvaged on February 18, 1945.

The Liberty Belle is still flying today, thanks to the Liberty Foundation.

Once it gets to the bottom, it turns and comes back up to the top. I spotted this little guy on the base of the post at the bottom! No idea who put him on it!!

St Johns Cathedral

St. John’s Cathedral is one of the few examples in the new world of classic gothic architecture, and one of the finest. Visitors come here from all parts of the world to see, worship, wonder, meditate and pray. The carvings in stone and wood and the figures in the stained glass include symbols of many faiths, making the Cathedral a “house of prayer for all people.” All are welcome here.

The Cathedral was begun in 1925 and completed in less than a generation. It is the sucessor to All Saints Cathedral, which stood in downtown Spokane, and is the fulfillment of the dream of the Right Reverend Edward Makin Cross, Third Bishop of Spokane.

Statue of Michael Phillip Anderson

Michael Phillip Anderson (December 25, 1959 – February 1, 2003) was a United States Colonel (USAF), a NASA astronaut, and the Space Shuttle payload commander of STS-107 (Columbia) who was killed when the craft disintegrated after reentry into the Earth's atmosphere.

Anderson was born in Plattsburgh, New York, but considered Spokane, Washington, to be his hometown.
